Family, Parents, Education and Career
Sonalee was born on 18 May 1988 in Pune, Maharashtra to her parents Manohar Kulkarni and Savinder Kulkarni. Her father, Manohar Kulkarni has served in the Indian Army as a doctor. Sonalee completed her school education at Army school (Kendriya Vidyalaya 1). She was an avid dancer during her school days and has been receiving training in Bharatnatyam since her school days. After her school life, Sonalee gained admission to Fergusson College, Pune from where she had her undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Keen to pursue a postgraduate degree in the Journalism discipline itself, Sonalee joined the Indira School of Communication for the same.
It was while shooting for a brief role for a docu-drama in FTII, Pune when Sonalee witnessed a motion picture camera. During her initial days, she bagged small roles in Marathi daily soaps, like the role of a Kathak dancer in the Marathi serial Ha Khel Sanchitacha. Fate smiled at Sonalee on the sets of this TV show, when she was offered a cameo role for the Marathi movie Gadhavach Lagn. Thereafter, she was offered a lead role in the Kedar Shinde-directed Marathi film Bakula Namdeo Ghotale, which proved to be her debut as a lead actress. The blockbuster hit also fetched her the Zee Gaurav award for best actress in 2008.
Soon after this, she delivered a slew of films that did not turn out to perform up to the mark at the box office. Some such movies were Hay Kay Nay Kay, Aaba Zindabad, Chal Gaja Karu Maja, Chal Gammat Karu and Gosht Lagnanatrchi.
Her minor phase of setbacks was halted in 2010 when she starred in the Ravi Jadhav-directed Marathi film ‘Natarang’. Sonalee had essayed the role of a lead dancer in a theatre group, with which she garnered immense praise from the audience worldwide. She also began being addressed by the name ‘Apsara’, due to the super hit song of the movie titled ‘Apsara Ali’. In the same year, she delivered another blockbuster hit named ‘Ajintha’, followed by other Marathi films such as Kshanbhar Vishranti, Irada Pakka, S Sasucha and Samudra.
Her gateway to Bollywood proved to be the adult comedy film, Grand Masti, opposite Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani. In her next Bollywood project, she appeared in a cameo role in Ajay Devgan’s starrer, Singham Returns in 2014. Later in 2018, she turned towards the Marathi small screens again. She was seen in shows such as Apsara Aali, Yuva Dancing Queen and Dancing Queen as a judge. In 2021, she also entered the Bigg Boss house on the sets of Bigg Boss Marathi 3 to promote her film Jhimma.
