Sudha Chandran was born in a family of South Indian descent on 27 September 1965 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. Her father, the late KD Chandran, was a former actor who was later employed at USIS. Sudha did her school education in Mumbai itself and then went on to pursue her undergraduate in arts from Mithibai College, Mumbai. The most unfortunate incident took place in her life when she was 16 years old, in the year 1981. Sudha and her family eventually met with a road accident in Tamil Nadu, in which Sudha ended up sustaining grievous injuries. She received immediate medical aid at a local hospital, after which she was referred to Vijaya hospital, located in Madras. The doctors operating on her discovered that gangrene had formed on her right leg, and it required amputation for eradication of the same.
Sudha, who was in the lowest of her spirits, underwent amputation. However, sometime later, she decided to regain her mobility with the help of a prosthetic Jaipur foot and make her dream of emerging as a star dancer come true. Returning to the stage after acquiring a prosthetic foot, Sudha stood unstoppable as she delivered dance performances in numerous countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, the UK, the USA, Canada, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait.
She first graced the big screens with her appearance in the Telugu film ‘Mayuri’, which was released in 1984 and whose plot was based on her own life struggles. The film finished as a blockbuster hit, which also fetched her the National film award- Special Jury award. Following this, she gained recognition, which offered her lead roles in a plethora of Malayalam and Tamil movies, some of which were, namely, Malarum Kiliyum, Sarvam Sakthimayam, Dharmam and Nambiar Keduvathillai. Her first Hindi debut happened to be the film, ‘Naache Mayuri’, a Hindi adaptation of the Telugu film ‘Mayuri’, which was well-praised by the audience.
However, her stint in the Hindi daily soaps garnered her critical acclaim. One of her most prominent and notable roles was in the Ekta Kapoor-produced serial, Kaheen Kisi Roz, in which she portrayed the role of ‘Ramola Sikand’ to catch the audience’s sight instantly. This prominent role is remembered till today by the people. Her appearance in the serial gained a lot of praise too, in which she was observed wearing chunky jewellery and designer bindis.
Other noteworthy roles played by Sudha include the character of Gayatri Kaul in the Star Plus serial K Street Pali Hill, that of a rich brat’s mother in Kuch Iss Tarah and Kashamkash Zindagi ki.
