Early life and Career
Radhika was born on 7th September 1985 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. She was born in Christian Medical College and hospital, Vellore, where her parents were employed as medical practitioners. Later her father, Charudutt Apte, became a senior neurosurgeon and was designated the post of chairman at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune.
Her primary school education began in Pune. After spending some years under regular schooling, she was home-schooled with four other friends in her neighbourhood, which she perceived as a confidence-boosting experience. During her days as a student, she was quite fond of mathematics, which was also taught to her by her grandmother, who held a PhD degree in the subject from an esteemed University in France. On the co-curricular front, Radhika underwent rigorous training in the classical dance form Kathak for eight years.
Radhika enrolled herself in Fergusson College, Pune, to pursue her Bachelor’s in Economics and Mathematics. Simultaneously, she also started engrossing herself in Marathi theatre plays. Her first theatre play was the Marathi play titled ‘Nako re Baba’ in 2003. She also expanded her acting skills to English and Hindi theatre plays, some of them being- Purnaviram, Tu, Kanyadaan, Brain Surgeon, That time, and Bombay Black.
After getting her hands on acting acumen, Radhika decided to go to Mumbai to join the Hindi film industry. However, the odds were not in favour of Radhika as she failed to land a Bollywood project, trying to manage her expenses with a meagre salary of Rs. 10,000 earned from theatre plays. The experience was demoralizing for Radhika, which caused her to return to her hometown Pune. Post her return to Pune. She decided to procure a degree in contemporary dance at London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the duration of which was a year long. Apte recalls this as a completely life-changing experience, where she witnessed a professional working atmosphere. Completing her higher studies in London, Apte returned to Pune, stayed in the city for a year, and then moved to Mumbai with her fiance Benedict.
Radhika’s first project in Bollywood happened to be the Hindi film “Vaah! Life ho to Aisi!” (2005), alongside Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, in which she played a brief role. Her former theatre plays proved fruitful for her when she was recommended as an actress by actor Rahul Bose to a Bengali director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury. Aniruddha signed Radhika for her next Bengali project Antaheen (2009), which Radhika turned into a success, also garnering praises for her acting skills. The year 2009 was more blissful for Radhika when she signed five different films belonging to various film industries, namely- Gho Mala Asla Hava (Marathi), Mor Dekhne Jungle Mein (Hindi), Ek Indian Manoos (Marathi), Life online (Hindi) and Samaantar (Hindi). Her 2010 projects included the thriller film ‘The waiting room,’ Ram Gopal Varma directed Rakht Charithra and Rakht Charithra 2.
It was in the year 2011 when Radhika’s career started gaining momentum. She was signed for two films under Ekta Kapoor owned Balaji banner, I AM and Shor In The City. Adding the list of her achievements in the other film industries, the latest additions were Ha Bharat Majha (Marathi), Tukaram (Marathi), and Dhoni (Tamil). Her role in Dhoni fetched her a SIIMA award nomination for the best actress in a supporting role.
In 2014, Radhika had projects from the other film industries awaiting her: Postcard, Pendulum, Legend, and Vettri Selvan in the languages Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu, respectively. She also delivered a blockbuster Marathi film to the industry in 2014, named Lai Bhaari. Legend and Lai Bhaari became a money-spinner at the box office, with Lai Bhaari being the Marathi megahit of the year. After appearing in these movies, Radhika started rising to fame and prominence.
In 2015, Radhika showcased her assiduous potential to release six notable films in the first eight months. Badlapur, her first release in 2015, brought her wide recognition and attention. I was followed by two releases down in South India, namely Haram (Malayalam) and Lion (Telugu). Switching back to Bollywood, Radhika again honoured the box office with the sex-comedy Hunter, a crowd-puller. Both Badlapur and Hunter made Radhika stand in the limelight, making her stardom grow.
Apte’s latest remarkable appearances on the silver screen include the movies “Maanjhi-The mountain man” (2015), “Kaun Kitne Paani me” (2015), and Kabali (2016, Tamil), and the 2018 Akshay Kumar starrer Pad-Man. Radhika has also resorted to OTT platforms, where her appearances and roles have gained critical acclaim and appreciation. Some of her engaging web series are- Ghoul, Lust Stories, and Sacred Games.
