Early Life and Career
Aishwarya’s family moved to Mumbai, where she spent her childhood days and began attaining education at Arya Vidya Mandir High School, Mumbai. She was an outstanding student, securing high marks throughout her school life. As part of her co-curricular activities, she started receiving music and classical dance training at 5 years old. In the 9th standard, she endorsed Camlin pencils in a commercial advertisement, marking her first appearance on the small screen.
She had her high school intermediate from two different institutions, Jai Hind College in the first year and DG Ruparel College in the second year. She appeared in her HSC exams, scoring an admirable 90 percent. After completing her 12th intermediate, she looked forward to pursuing her medical career, citing her interest and excellence in Zoology. But then she chose to be an architect and enrolled herself at Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture. In the middle of her college life, she was fascinated by modeling and finally dropped out of her institution to make it big in modeling and fashion shows.
Rai saw her first success in the modeling niche after winning Ford’s international supermodel contest in 1991. As a result of her success, she was featured in the American edition of the famous fashion magazine Vogue. Two years later, she again made her small screen appearance in a Pepsi ad film, appearing alongside Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhary. In 1994, she took part in the Miss India pageant, ending up being the first runner-up and seconding Sushmita Sen. She was crowned with multiple titles like Miss India World, Miss Catwalk, Miss Perfect Ten, Miss Photogenic, Miss Miraculous, and Miss Popular. Being the first runner-up in the Miss India pageant, Rai represented India that same year in the Miss World pageant and won. Along with the Miss World crown, she won two more awards, like the Miss Photogenic award and the Miss World continental queen of beauty Asia and Oceania. Gaining these major accolades, she left a long-lasting impression of glamour.
Film career
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her first silver-screen appearance in the Tamil political drama, Iruvar (1997). She was cast opposite actors Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, Tabu, and Revathi. Not conversant in the Tamil language, Rai had her dialogues dubbed for the film by Tamil actress Rohini. The film became a critical success and won the award for the best film at the Belgrade International Film Festival. In the same year, Aishwarya boarded her train to Bollywood with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, alongside Bobby Deol, a romantic comedy. However, both her films were commercial failures, and her success in the film industry was still skeptical, with critics questioning her acting caliber.
Aishwarya gave a jaw-breaking reply to the critics with her role in the next Tamil project, “Jeans,” directed by Shankar’s ace Tamil director. Aishwarya’s co-actors in this film were Prashanth and Nassar. It was a romantic drama film that happened to be a commercial success, garnering praise and appreciation for Aishwarya. Rai worked hard for the film, practicing and rehearsing for her difficult dialogues in Tamil. However, things were still difficult for Rai in the Hindi film industry when she featured in another disastrous Hindi movie, “Aa Ab Laut Chalein.” Both the film’s plot and Aishwarya’s role did not go well with the critics and the audience. Rai was even highly criticized for just being a pretty face with absolutely zero acting skills.
In 1999, Sanjay Leela Bhansali came across Aishwarya Rai and was smitten by the glaze in her eyes. Consequently, he signed her for “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” a romantic drama film starring Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan, along with Aishwarya Rai. This movie turned out to be a milestone in Aishwarya’s career due to its outstanding plot. Also, Aishwarya outperformed her co-actors and was lauded by the critics for the same. This movie also fetched her a Filmfare award for the best actress. Rai’s upcoming projects made her rise to fame, popularity, and prominence in films such as Taal (1999), Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil, 2000), Josh (2000), and Humara Dil Aapke Paas hai (2000), etc. Some movies done after that were an amalgamation of both positive and negative reviews, such as Mohabbatein (2000), Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000), and Albela (2000).
Furthermore, Rai emerged as an enchanting beauty in her movies released after the year 2000. Some such films include Devdas (2002), Chokher Bali (Bengali, 2003), Dil ka Rishta (2003), and Kuch Na Kaho (2003). She has always enthralled the audience with her dazzling and spectacular looks. Apart from featuring as a beauty queen in her movies, she has also landed in action roles like Khakee (2004), Pride and Prejudice ( 2004 British film that gained her international recognition), Raincoat(2004), and Shabd (2005). Some of her most liked movies were Dhoom 2 (2006), where she starred as a female thief and made the film an absolute blockbuster, and Guru (2007) opposite Abhishek Bachchan. Guru was said to be the eminent businessman Dhirubhai Ambani’s biography and became the most critically acclaimed film of 2007. It also gained accolades overseas for its brilliant performance and smashed all existing box-office records. Aishwarya also bagged her 7th Filmfare nomination for the best actress for Guru. In the same year, Aishwarya tied the knot with her Guru co-actor and son of the legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan.
Some more remarkable performances by Aishwarya Rai include Jodhaa Akbar (2007), Sarkar Raj (2008), The Pink Panther 2 (2009), and Enthiran/Robot (2010). Her final film for the year 2010 was Guzaarish’s opposite, Hrithik Roshan. Though it was a failure at the box office, it recorded positive reviews from the critics and the viewers. After 2010, Rai took a 5-year long break from acting to look after her family and married life.
The critics also welcomed the critics with their kind and appreciative comments on the actress’s comeback and performance in the film. The movie “Jazbaa” (2015) marked her comeback in the Hindi film industry, in which she did utmost justice to the role she was playing. Her last three Hindi movies have been Sarabjit (2016), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), and Fanney Khan (2018), which have shown a decent performance at the box office.
Rai’s upcoming movie project is a Tamil film (Ponniyin Selvan), under the veteran Kollywood director Mani Ratnam’s guidance.
