Deepika Padukone Education & Carrer
Deepika’s primary school education began at Sophia High school, Bengaluru, and high school intermediate was pursued at Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru. She considered her father to be her role model when she was young. She had inherited sportfulness from her father and was an adept badminton player during her childhood days, representing India at National level championships. She also landed numerous modelling offered at the tender age of 8 years and emerged as a child model in advertising campaigns. In the 10th standard, she felt her passion for modelling/acting and decided to drop her bright career in sports for acting.
To pursue her college studies, she joined Indira Gandhi National Open University, located in New Delhi, where she pursued her undergraduate in Sociology. Later, she had to discontinue her studies as her modelling assignments were clashing with her college schedule. Finally, in 2004, she began working as a full-time model under Prasad Bidapa, a fashion stylist.
Padukone’s first appearances on the screen include a television commercial for the soap brand “Liril” and singer Himesh Reshammiya’s famous video song “Naam hai Tera.” Subsequently, she also bagged the “Model of the Year” award in 2005, after walking the ramp for designer Suneet Varma at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards. Even more, the limelight struck her when she was featured on the famous Kingfisher Calendar, alongside splendid models from across the world. Eventually, Deepika started receiving acting offers, and she shifted to Mumbai. Not sure about her acting acumen and considering herself inexperienced, she enrolled in Anupam Kher’s acting academy “Actor Prepares” to get hold of acting.
Finally, she had her first silver screen appearance in the Kannada film industry with the film “Aishwarya” in which she played the female lead role. Spotted by the famous Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan, Deepika made a stunning entry into the Hindi film industry with the blockbuster movie “Om Shanti Om,” sharing the screen with the king of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan. Although, before Om Shanti Om, Deepika had been signed for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Saawariya, later Deepika’s role was passed to Sonam Kapoor. After Om Shanti Om’s commercial success, Farah signed Padukone for “Happy New Year,” set to release in 2010, but the film’s shooting was postponed due to untold reasons.
Following Om Shanti Om, Deepika was flooded with acting offers from various Bollywood directors. She acted in Bachna Ae Haseeno, Chandni Chowk to China, and Love Aaj Kal. The first two films from this series were a failure at the box office, followed by Love Aaj Kal, an average performing movie.
Deepika has also proven her worth as an exemplary actress, with energy-efficient performances in historical dramas like Goliyon ki Rasleela-Ramleela, Padmaavat, and Bajirao Mastani. The year 2017 marked a prodigious expansion in her career, as she signed up for a Hollywood movie opposite the star Vin Diesel in XXX: Return of Xander Cage.
She also threw light on the life of acid attack survivors and their further hurdles to obtain justice through the film “Chhapaak” (2020), which was also the first movie produced under her banner. The movie was not a money-spinning one, but Deepika’s character was much lauded and critically acclaimed.
Deepika’s upcoming projects include 83, a sports story about India’s next win at the 1983 World cup, and also the much-awaited S.S. Rajamouli’s Mahabharata, where she would be playing Draupadi.
