Lakshmi Manchu was born on 8 October 1977 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India to parents Mohan Babu and Vidya Manchu. Her real name is Manchu Lakshmi Prasanna. Her father Mohan Babu is a renowned actor who has lent immense contribution to the Telugu film industry (Tollywood). After her biological mother Vidya Manchu passed away, her father married Nirmala Manchu, who is her stepmother. Lakshmi has two siblings, Vishnu Manchu and her stepbrother Manoj Manchu. After attaining her school education in India, Lakshmi flew to Oklahoma, situated in the US, to pursue her Undergraduate degree in theatre. She received her bachelor’s in theatre from Oklahoma City University. Having a sound background in the field of acting, she first faced the camera at the tender age of 4 years.
Her luck shined when she was offered roles in American movies after the completion of her bachelor’s degree. Her debut film happened to be the American drama ‘The Ode’ (2008), after which she was seen in Dead Air (2009) and Thank You For Washing (2009). Subsequently, she stormed into Tollywood in 2011, grading the South Indian screen with her Telugu debut Anangaanaga O Cheerdu, which brought her critical acclaim and three prominent awards. Following this, she made appearances in other Telugu films as well, namely some of which are, Dongala Mutha, Uu Doosukeltha, Chandamama Kathalu, Lakshmi Bomb, W/O Rama and the web series Mrs Subbalakshi.
Apart from Tollywood, Lakshmi has contributed to Kollywood (Tamil film industry) and Bollywood as well. Some of her Kollywood projects include the films Kadal (2-13), Kaatrin Mozhi and Marathen Maanithen. She has featured in one Hindi film, ‘Department’, which was released in 2012. She has also starred in the silent movie titled ‘A day in the life of Lakshmi Manchu’s feet. She was a recipient of the esteemed SIIMA award, two Filmfare awards (South) and two state Nandi awards.
