Saina Nehwal is an Indian professional badminton player and model from Hisar. She was born on 17 March 1990 in Hisar, Haryana. Her father is Harvir Singh Nehwal, and her mother is Usha Rani Nehwal. She has an elder sister named Chandranshu Nehwal. Neha completed her schooling at St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad.
Her parents had been playing badminton for years. Her mother, Usha Rani, was a state-level badminton player in Haryana. Nehwal decided to study badminton to fulfill his mother’s dream of becoming a national-level badminton player. Meanwhile, her sister chose to play volleyball. Her father, one of the leading players in the university, used all his provident funds to train her in badminton. After moving to Hyderabad in 1998, she was enrolled in a karate class and later earned a brown belt. In 2014, he trained at Gopichand’s Badminton Academy under Pullela Gopichand, joined Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore, and trained under U. Vimal Kumar. In 2017, she returned to training under Gopichand again.
She has won 24 international titles, including eleven Super Series titles. Although she finished second in the world in 2009, it was only in 2015 that she could reach number one in the world. She is thus the only female player from India and the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone overall. She represented India three times at the Olympics and won two bronze medals.
