Early life and career:

Sonam Kapoor was born in a Punjabi Hindu family on 9th June 1985 in dreams, Mumbai. She is the daughter of Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor and model Sunita Kapoor. Sunita has also been a designer, apart from being a model. The family consists of two more children born after Sonam, named Harshvardhan Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor.

Sonam completed her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir School, Juhu, Mumbai. Since childhood, she has been an active participant in co-curricular activities like singing, dancing, and sports like Basketball. During her school days, she left an impression on her teachers and the co-students as a proficient Kathak dancer, melodious classical singer, and an aesthetic Rugby and Basketball player. She also used to take part in dramatics and theatre plays during her school days. After completing her school education, she enrolled at the United World College of Southeast Asia, situated in Singapore, to pursue her undergraduate degree in theatre and arts. She had developed a keen interest in scriptwriting and film direction while pursuing this degree. After successfully attaining a degree in the former, she also applied at the University of London to pursue her bachelor’s degree in economics and political science, but later dropped out of the University and flew back to her hometown, Mumbai.

In 2005, her first scriptwriting and film direction offer came flying to her when her family spent holidays in Singapore and ran into Rani Mukherjee, their family friend. Rani was all set to begin shooting for the Helen Keller biography, “Black.” Sonam pleaded with the film director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, to work as a crew member on the film. Upon being approached and persuaded by her influential father, Anil Kapoor, Bhansali complied with Sonam and appointed her assistant. Black happened to be a critically acclaimed film that showed praise, love, and appreciation from the audience and the critics.

During the shooting of “Black,” Sanjay Leela Bhansali thought of launching Sonam as the female lead in his upcoming project, Saawariya. Gradually, working as an assistant director and noticing the film stars performing in front of the lens urged Kapoor to try her hand in acting as well. Sonam was an obese person, weighing 80 kilograms with pounds of fat, tampering with her beauty. On Bhansali’s advice, Sonam made it a target to hit the silver screen with a slim physique and consequently lost 35 kilograms of excess weight in 2 years.

Finally, in 2007, Sonam’s debut movie, Saawariya, hit the theatres. Sonam’s first two projects with Bollywood (Saawariya and Delhi-6) were a commercial failure and did not perform up to the mark. The critics and the audience mercilessly criticized the plot and the storyline of the movies. Also, Sonam’s acting calibre was questioned and challenged. Despite such odds, Sonam grabbed a Filmfare award and a Stardust Award for Saawariya.
Sonam gave the perfect reply to critics through acting with her first release in 2010, named “I hate Luv stories” alongside Imran Khan. The movie was a romantic comedy that garnered praise and appreciation from everywhere, especially the youth. The film did a business of ₹725.2 million worldwide and was the most talked-about movie during that time, marking Sonam’s first successful project.

Sonam’s next featured in the movie “Aisha,” produced by her sister, Rhea. This movie was also a successful run in the theatres due to Sonam’s portrayal of a lively and carefree character, entangled in cupid games and engaging others. Kapoor now saw success and fame being served on her table. But, destiny had other plans for Sonam. Her career went downhill after Aisha delivered three back-to-back flops at the box office- Thank You (2011), Mausam, and Players. These movies were not received by both the viewers and the critics, and Sonam’s career was endangered. But Sonam made a commendable comeback on the silver screen with her 2013 release, Raanjhanaa, alongside Tamil actor Dhanush. The film was a gross hit in the theatres, bagging love, praises, and earnings worldwide. This is said to be Kapoor’s best work to date and also a milestone in her career. Sonam dedicated herself entirely too fitting in the character she was playing, which paid off in the end. Later in 2013, her brief role in Milkha Singh’s biopic, “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,” was also loved. She played the love interest of Farhan Akhtar in the film and won the Filmfare award for best film. In 2014 and 2015, she gave three more flop movies to the industry – Khoobsurat, Dolly ki Doli and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. However, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo played a pivotal role in turning the limelight towards her.

In 2016, Sonam hit high spots in the film industry by signing “Neerja,” a biopic on the altruistic air hostess Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life to save other passengers’ lives on a hijacked plane. The movie was based on real events. Sonam, to excel in the character, even met the family of the deceased air hostess. The movie was the most critically acclaimed one of 2016, making even the critics fall head over heels for Sonam’s performance. This film was counted as her best performing movie ever in Bollywood.

Her next project happened to be with the daring and action-packed hero of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, in the film “Padman” (2018). The biopic was based on the life of a personality hailing from Tamil Nadu, named Arunachalam Muruganantham, who promoted open discussion of menstrual hygiene and brought an alternative to sanitary pads, thereby discarding menstrual talks from the list of Taboos. The movie is based on social issues with a slight touch of “freedom of expression for women,” it was also a successful project for the actors. 2018 bestowed more blessings on Kapoor when later in 2018, she got hitched to the Indian businessman Anand Ahuja in Mumbai. Following this, she delivered two more high-grossing movies to the Hindi film industry, namely “Veere di Wedding” and “Sanju.”
Sonam’s latest projects with Bollywood have been the films “Ek Ladki ko Dekha to Aisa Laga” and “The Zoya Factor,” which have marked a decent performance cine-world. Sonam still has new accolades to gain, and we wish her a happy future ahead.
