Early life and Career
Swara Bhaskar was born and brought up in New Delhi, began her primary school education at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, and completed her high school intermediate from the same institution. After that, she pursued her undergraduate degree in English literature at Miranda House College, Delhi. After successfully acquiring her undergraduate degree, she decided to take up a post-graduation course. Finally, she did her M.A. in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. During her time spent at JNU, she was an active part of protest marches, rallies, and strikes raised for social issues. Besides that, she used to indulge in acting, theatre plays, and dramatics as well. After discovering her acting talent, she worked as a theatre artist in a theatre group owned by Mr N.K. Sharma, which is named ‘Act One’ in Delhi itself.
To make it big in the Hindi film industry, Swara migrated to Mumbai in the year 2008. Like every other newbie, Swara had her share of struggles and strivings in the beginning. Fortunately, that same year, she auditioned for the film “Niyati,” whose director was Pravesh Bharadwaj. Due to undisclosed reasons, the director, along with the actors and other crew members, had to shut down the film. Finally, in 2009, Swara got her first break with the English movie “Madholal Keep Walking.” The film failed terribly at the box office and could not be a commercial success.
Swara entered Bollywood with the film “Guzaarish” in 2010, alongside legendary actors Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. This movie made her realize that she needed a lead role to mark her presence in the industry.
In 2011, Swara starred in the romantic comedy “Tanu Weds Manu” opposite actors Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut, with her character name “Payal.” The role played by Swara was well-received and loved by the audience. After that, Swara played various roles in movies, belonging to all categories. She is mainly recognized by the audience and the critics for playing bold and outspoken characters in her films.
Swara has also showcased her acting skills on the small screen, where she first made her television debut with the serial “Samvidhaan.” The serial was set against the backdrop of the Constitution of India and portrayed its ups and downs. She has been mocked by netizens on Social media platforms like Twitter for supporting caste politics. One such phenomenon was observed in 2017 when she congratulated the Dalit leader, Jignesh Meghwani, on winning the elections.
She criticized the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed “Padmaavat”(2018). According to her, the Sati tradition was being glorified in the movie, which she considers wrong and immoral.
In 2019, she again landed herself in a controversy when she verbally abused her co-actor behind his back on a celebrity chat show, “Son of Abish.” In an advertisement film, her co-actor was a 4-year-old kid, who addressed her by calling her aunty, and Swara got offended by it.
