Early life and Career:

Vidya Balan was born in a Tamilian family on 1st January 1979. Her place of birth was Palakkad district, which lies in Kerala, India. Mumbai is her hometown and she had her residence in Chembur, a well-known locality in Mumbai. Vidya was born to parents P.R. Balan (Father), who is designated on the post of executive Vice-president in digi cable, and Saraswathy Balan (Mother) who is a homemaker. Vidya has an elder sister as well, named Priya Balan, who is employed in an advertising company.

Vidya was admitted to St. Anthony Girls’ High school where her educational journey began. Since her childhood days, she aspired to appear on the silver screen and cut it in the film industry. Her role models were actresses Madhuri Dixit and Shabana Azmi due to whom she was inclined towards acting. Her first-ever feature was on the small screen, in the Ekta Kapoor produced daily soap “Hum Paanch”, where she was assigned to play the role of a bespectacled teenage girl. The show was aired in 1995 when Vidya was just 16 years old. After successfully completing her part in the show, she landed another acting offer by Anurag Basu for his daily soap, but Vidya denied it as she was looking for an opportunity on the big screen. Then, on her parents’ advice, she decided to pursue her studies first and then embark on her acting journey. So, she enrolled herself in St, Xavier’s College, Mumbai for pursuing her undergraduate degree in sociology and later did her post-graduate too, from the University of Mumbai.

When Vidya was on the brink of completing her post-graduate program, she was signed for the female lead role in Chakram, a Malayalam movie opposite the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. Subsequently, she was heaped with acting offers for 12 other Malayalam movies too. Chakram was later postponed due to production difficulties. The postponement of a movie starring the legendary actor Mohanlal was an unprecedented incident in the Malayalam movie industry and people, especially film producers, put allegations on Vidya for bringing evil fortune to the film industry. All other roles offered to Vidya were withdrawn as well.

After receiving condemnation from the Malayalam film industry, Vidya decided to test her fate in Kollywood (Tamil film industry). But her share of struggles continued in Kollywood too, as she was dropped from some Tamil films like Run (2002). She was replaced by other actresses in some, such as Mansellam (2003), and was also uncomfortable shooting for some. One more Malayalam film successfully shot by Vidya, named Kalari Vikraman (2003) did not release in the theatres. Life was unfair to Vidya in those times when she was trying to prosper in the Film industry. Therefore, Vidya continued her growth on the small screen, spending her time working on Television commercials, ad films, and music videos.

After a long series of hustles, Vidya got her first break with the Bengali film “Bhalo Theko” (2003), a drama film in which Vidya played the role of a young woman. The film went well and was nicely received by the audience too, making Vidya win an Anandalok Pushkar award for the same. It was a dream come true for Vidya and it motivated her to do even better in her upcoming projects.

Vidya’s doorway to Bollywood happened to be the Vidhu Vinod Chopra directed film “Parineeta” (2005), alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. The movie was based on a 1914 Bengali novel which carried the same name. Vidya’s saree-draped appearance on the big screen made her look absolutely resplendent. She was praised by the critics as well as the watchers of the film. She also won the Filmfare award for the Best female debut. A decent delivery from Vidya’s side earned her another movie under the Chopra banner opposite Sanjay Dutt, named Lagey Raho Munna Bhai (2006). The movie was a romantic comedy starring Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, and Boman Irani in lead roles and garnered ample love, laughter, and appreciation due to its tickling dialogues and a unique plot. It was also among the highest-grossing films of the year 2006. In 2007, Vidya gave another blockbuster hit to the Hindi film industry in the form of “Guru” starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.

Although her portrayal of a sclerosis patient wasn’t well-received by the critics, the film shook the entire film industry in 2007, emerging as a worldwide superhit movie. She was next seen in poorly performing movies that were a failure at the box office, but the actress acknowledged them as a good learning experience and a medium of self-discovery. Some such movies were Eklavya: The Royal guard, Salaam-e-Ishq, Heyy Babyy, and Kismat Konnection. In between these poorly performing movies, she again delivered a hilarious superhit movie named Bhool Bhulaiya, a remake of the Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu. Vidya moved heaven and the earth to fit in the character assigned to her, ending up fainting on the set sometimes, staying in seclusion for some days, and spending hours practising Kathak. Consequently, Bhool Bhulaiya was a commercial success and the most talked-about movie of the year 2007.

Vidhya Balan started rising to prominence in the year 2009, where some of her accomplishing and roaring successes happened to be the movies “Halla Bol” (2009), “Paa” (2010), “Ishqiya” (2010), “No one Killed Jessica” (2011) and “The Dirty Picture” (2011). The year 2011 had a lot to offer to Vidya. Her roles in the former releases were extremely impressive, portraying grace and integrity. Her role in the latter (The Dirty Picture) was something hard to imagine for the Indian audience, as far as Vidya’s image in the film industry was concerned. She played the role of the controversial B-grade South Indian actress, Silk Smitha. Vidya left no stone unturned to make it the most successful and highest-grossing movie of the year, even if it cost her losing her a sophisticated and demure image in Bollywood. The actress gained 12 kilograms of body weight to resemble the character she was playing. The movie ended up shaking the entire Indian cinema, gaining accolades and popularity for Vidya’s bodacious appearance and firm acting skills. Another award-winning performance came to Vidya’s doorstep through the film “Kahaani” (2012), a suspense thriller. The intriguing trailer of the movie turned out to be a treat to the audience and the film was well-received at the box office, further garnishing Vidya’s image on the big screen.

The coming years (2013-2017) were not as merry as earlier years for Vidya, as she delivered a series of unsuccessful films to the film industry, such as Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke side effects, Bobby Jasoos, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, and Te3n. These films caused a major setback in Vidya’s career, also fetching her relentless criticism. But Balan made a tremendous comeback with the sequel of Kahaani, named Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (2016). Thus, her series of continuous flops came to a standstill.

Some recent projects that brought her even more fame, success, and popularity are Tumhari Sulu, NTR: Kathanayakudu( Telugu), NTR: Mahanayakudu (Telugu), Nerkonda Paarvai (Tamil), Mission Mangal Natkhat, and Shakuntala Devi. Vidya will be next seen in “Sherni” and Indira Gandhi’s biopic titled- Indira.
